What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a healthcare discipline where qualified practitioners adjust subluxations (joint and nerve dysfunction) in the spine to allow the Nervous System to function properly, heal the body and maximise health. The goal of the adjustment is to restore normal biomechanics, improve spinal function and remove interference from the Nervous System so the body can continue to heal and repair itself. There are many different techniques that can be used; Dr Shondelle will determine the best technique for you.

Are Chiropractic Adjustments safe?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive and drug free healthcare, therefore the risks associated with it are very low. Adverse events are very rare and Dr Shondelle will assess you individually for any risks before commencing care. Chiropractors spend many years training in the examination of the spine and correction of Vertbral Subluxations.

Why do i need to be adjusted if im not in pain?

Many people believe that pain is the only representation of dysfunction in the body, however many other signs and symptoms of Vertebral Subluxation can be occuring and causing long term dysfunction and degeneration. This makes it very important to be checked regularly.

Having felt the benefits of Chiropractic adjustments for themselves, many patients choose to continue with wellness or maintenance care to ensure that their spine remains healthy and optimal, just like visiting the dentist to prevent cavities.

Chiropractic and Pregnancy

What are the benefits of Chiropractic care during pregnancy?

- Less back pain and muscle tension

- Reduced need for pain medication

- Proper pelvic alignment and balance

- May reduce symptoms like heartburn, sciatica, shortness of breath, constipation, frequent urination and pelvic pain.

In a study by Dr Joan Fallon, found that first time Mums averaged a 24% shorter labour, while experienced Mums (delivered more than once) had a 39% reduction in average labour time.

Research shows that correct alignment of the pelvis and spine contributes to a more straightforward labour with less pain and trauma for mother and child, and may significantly reduce labour time.

Is Chiropractic Safe for Pregnant women?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive, drug free discipline that has very low risks. Adverse events are very rare and Dr Shondelle will discuss any risks with you individually before care commences. In general there are no increased risks of side effects with Chiropractic for pregnant women. Dr Shondelle will use special techniques including the Webster technique and table modifications to avoid unnecessary pressure on the abdomen.

Can Chiropractic contribute to optimal fetal position in the womb?

Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pedicatric Association, developed a specific technique, called the "Webster Technique" which has been shown to allow for the optimal pelvis alignment during pregnancy by correcting sacral subluxtions.

The technique became popular for breech positioned babies. In a study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in 2002 reported that this technique has an 82% success rate. It has also been successful with babies in a transverse or posterior position.

It is important to realise that Chiropractors are not turning babies or assessing and managing any fetal conditions or positions directly. However, by ensuring the balance in a pregnant woman's body, it may result in the fetus achieving an ideal position for birth.

Chiropractic and Kids

How Chiropractic can help my child?

No matter what stage of development your child is in, Chiropractic can be beneficial for improving health.

Subluxations (nerve interference) can begin during the birth process, bumps and falls as they get older, sports injuries, and poor posture while studying or relaxing. When the body is free of interference, your child may see improvements with reaching milestones, colic, sleeping, feeding, irritability, concentration at school, digestion, growing pains and frequent colds and flus - the list goes on!

Chiropractic is not a cure for symptoms but a way to support the body to heal itself as it innately knows how to do.
